Volkswagen Gen.Urban

Volkswagen is now testing an autonomous prototype called “Gen.Urban” on public roads. With this robo-car, the company’s research division aims to explore how an autonomous vehicle behaves in public traffic and how people respond to it.

In principle, the vehicle can drive autonomously at Level 4; in plain terms, this means it can theoretically operate without a human driver. Gen.Urban has neither a steering wheel nor pedals, and the fallback level to the safety driver is managed via Micro-Wheel and Tilter. All steering and braking components are part of the joysteer 3.0 system. Road approval was obtained through a Delta homologation.
